WBAY-TV Green Bay-Fox Cities-Northeast Wisconsin NewsInterview with Donald, Betina Driver

The two-hour season premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” featuring Packers wide receiver Donald Driver can be seen Monday night at 7 o'clock here on WBAY-TV. Chris Roth is in Los Angeles and spoke with Driver as he shined up his dancing shoes. Welcome to Hollywood. In a CBS studio for an ABC network program, Donald Driver is preparing to make his debut on “Dancing with the Stars.” Donald's been rehearsing for a couple of weeks. His entire family just arrived on Friday. They will stay here for the duration. According to his number-one fan, they've packed for a long stay. “I think the nation will discover that he is a pretty good dancer,” wife Betina Driver said. “They know about his smile, of course, his wit, but they're going to find out very quickly he's pretty good, pretty dedicated. Kind of surprise the world, I think.” According to the future Packer Hall of Famer, “It's totally different. Takes you out of your comfort zone. For me it's more of the posture, not be so manly but let loose, loosen the shoulders up, and then not be so quick at certain things if you don't have to be.” Quickie out of his comfort zone! Donald laughed at that. “Quickie has quick feet, so Quickie thought the quick step would be good, but sometimes you have to go slow on the quick step. So that's been just a transition part, but it's been fun, it's worked well, and I'm having a lot of fun doing it.” His family is expecting a long stay in Los Angeles, but where does Driver fit in with the favorites, competing against the likes of Gladys Knight, Melissa Gilbert, Sherri Shepherd, and Jameel White — Urkel from “Family Matters.” Turns out, he's as confident going into the competition as he is about going into a football game. “I'm pretty good on the favorite part of it. I think the fans, Packer Nation's going to make sure I stay here a long time. I've just got to do my part on the dance floor, make sure that I continue to have the votes that I need, because I think the fans are going to make sure we set a record for fan votes on dancing with the stars.” He gives us just a hint of what to expect on Monday's premiere. “We're doing the green and gold, we're doing that for the first one. Other than that, I can't give anything up. You have to watch.”Monday is dress rehearsal and then it's on to the big show. We'll be here live at 5 and 6, and then at 10 o'clock with post-dance reaction from Donald.
