The Washington Area Girls Soccer League was in action all weekend despite another wave of rough weather, with surprisingly cold temperatures accompanying the rainfall that has become a constant reality of this fall season. That led to a few more rainouts and challenged the fortitude of those who did play, but with some teams having only now played their first game, there will likely have been few complaints. In High School Division 2, first-place side NVSC Jr. Majestics 94 were held to a 2-2 draw at home by winless FASA ELITE ’93 on Sunday morning, while Arundel Magic Premiere notched their first victory of the season with a 4-2 defeat of Northern Virginia SC’s other representative in the division, NVSC Jr. Majestics 93, at Meade High School. Herndon Sting consolidated their spot at the top of High School Division 1 with a 2-1 win over CYA Phoenix on Sunday, though McLean Fusion remain close behind thanks to their defeat of Loudoun 93G Red by the same scoreline at Spring Hill Rec Center. Fusion sit four points back from Herndon with two games in hand. Lee-Mount Vernon Patriots 93 finally broke out of their 0-3 season-opening slump with a close-run 1-0 triumph over Loudoun 92G Black in Under-19 Division 4 competition. Elsewhere in the same bracket, Arundel Blast handed out a 7-0 thrashing to an unlucky SYC Monsoon squad which now sits at the bottom of the standings after an 0-2 start. A full slate of U-19 Division 3 action opened with McLean Power Green’s well-taken 3-1 defeat of VSA Heat Gold at Linway Terrace Park on Sunday morning despite the home side’s involvement in a tough Virginia State Cup match barely 12 hours beforehand. Arlington Explosion White continued their climb up the standings with a 1-0 defeat of D.C. Stoddert Blast, and Stafford Revolution 93 Blue-Spirit remain rooted to the bottom of the table after their 3-0 loss to Great Falls Extreme Blue, who now stand at seven points with a 2-2-1 record. In WAGS’ U-18 competition, Calvert Eclipse have a division-leading 12 points from five games after rolling to a 4-1 home win over Ashburn Galaxy on Sunday. But with no other team having played more than four games so far, the Marylanders will have to watch and wait to see if they can hold their place in the standings. It was a good weekend for the FPYC teams in U-17 Division 5 as the Fairfax club’s Rebels Blue stayed atop the division with a 6-0 dispatching of Winchester United 94G on Saturday and FPYC Blue Angels defeated Chantilly SC’s Magic squad 4-2 the next day. For their part, Winchester rebounded with a 3-2 victory over FASA Premiere Unity ’94 while the Herndon Rebels surprised the Olney Spartans with a 1-0 result at Herndon High School to earn their first win of the season. One division up, VISTA BC United ran their points total to nine with a 2-1 defeat of Columbia SC Explosion, a feat matched by SYC Storm with Sunday’s 1-0 triumph over the Alexandria Titans at West Springfield High School. Due to games in hand, however, for now both victors must defer the top spot to Old Dominion FC Clash, who remain perfect at 2-0 with two postponed matches still needing to be rescheduled. Goals were at a premium in U-16 Division 2 on Sunday, with scoreless draws between FC Virginia Heat and Northern Virginia SC Jr. Majestics as well as Laurel Wildcats and Herndon Curve. Elsewhere, Chantilly Revolution ’95 and Herndon Comets White grabbed victories to remain among the league leaders so far. U-16 Division 3 play was highlighted by the Davidsonville Lady Gators’ 4-1 hammering of D.C. Stoddert’s Mischief Blue squad, while a 3-0 win over VSA Heat Blue ensured that Arundel’s Blue Flames remain tops in U-16 Division 5 after a busy Sunday slate that featured 20 goals in five games. In U-15 Division 1, D.C. Stoddert Metros Blue 96 (0-1-3) are still in search of their first league victory following a 2-1 loss to McLean 96 Force Green. The downtown side is now exactly level with SYA FC Virginia 96, who did well to hold the division-leading PWSI Courage ’96 Red to a 1-1 deadlock. In Division 3, leaders Herndon Chaos extended their flawless record with a 1-0 road win over FASA Premiere Impact ’96 and are followed in the standings by Howard County, Md.’s Thunder Extreme, who overcame the Herndon Heat by a 2-0 scoreline. Due to the Rael Vodicka Memorial Tournament, all of WAGS will have the upcoming Columbus Day Weekend off from league play, with most divisions resuming on Sunday, October 16.
