TIME magazine’s May cover story on “Attachment Parenting” has stirred controversy. The cover features Jamie Lynn Grumet and her three-year old son standing on a chair while she breastfeeds him. TIME magazine photographer, Martin Schoeller, found the idea of “attachment parenting” fascinating and photographed four families subscribing to the idea of extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping and “baby wearing.” Co-sleeping involves children sleeping with their parents into the toddler age, while “baby wearing” involves infants physically attached to their parents via sling.Schoeller says of the idea, “When you think of breast-feeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids.” He adds, “I liked the idea of having the kids standing up to underline the point that this was an uncommon situation.”Uncommon indeed. In fact, the magazine cover has caused more of a stir than Grumet had anticipated. Celebs took to Twitter to convey their disdain toward the magazine cover with tweets from Alyssa Milano, “@Time, no! You missed the mark! You’re supposed to be making it easier for breastfeeding moms. Your cover is exploitive & extreme,” to Joanna Krupa, “Time magazine cover is pretty disturbing! Breast feeding a 3yr old is wrong! What’s wrong w ppl!”Grumet appeared on Today to defend to herself and the photo. Although she admits she wasn’t “expecting” the backlash, she adds that “We knew exactly what we were going to get into,” E! News reports. She goes on to say, “I understand some of the breastfeeding advocates are actually upset about this, because I feel like they don’t show the nurturing side to attachment parenting.” She insists, “This isn’t how we breastfeed at home. It’s more of a nurturing, cradling situation…It did create such a media craze.”Check out the full interview below:Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economyImage: TIME magazine
