Jeston Smith can’t wait to get home to Atlanta for Christmas and eat a piece of his grandmother’s apple cobbler. Smith, 19, also will get to see his twin brother, Preston, for the first time in nearly a year. The anticipation makes Smith antsy as he waits for his flight to Georgia at the YMCA Welcome Center at Will Rogers World Airport. “It’s relaxing here,” he said. They make you feel welcome.”It’s the first time in Smith’s life he’s been apart from his brother for this long. He’s been stationed at Fort Sill and will be reunited with him over the holidays. Smith’s story isn’t unusual. This weekend is the busiest weekend of the year at the welcome center. From Friday into early Saturday morning, more than 500 military men and women, most from Fort Sill, will arrive at the welcome center to await their flights home. Many times of the year, the welcome center is a place of departure. Soldiers wait here before leaving for boot camp. But smiles on the faces of family and loved ones show it’s the coming home part that makes the center a special place, especially this time of year. “It’s so special that they can take care of the military this way,” said airport spokeswoman Karen Carney. “It’s a good place for them to wait instead of the terminal.”All military personnel and their families can use the center. Volunteers help keep soldiers at ease, provide drinks and other comforts. The 4,000-square-foot center is located in a cargo bay just east of Baggage Claim 1. “We’re family,” said center director Clyde Tullos, an Army veteran. “We take care of each other.”Tullos said the center is welcome to military families, retired military, and those on active duty. Individuals wanting to donate their time or money to the center can call 680-9781 or visit ymca.org. News Photo Galleriesview all
