Port Richmond rallies for baseball win over McKee/S.I. Tech

Staten Island Advance, May 11, 2011 11:58 p.m.

Mike Violetta’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning capped a comeback and Tom Curry made it stand up with a gutty seventh-inning save as Port Richmond edged visiting McKee/Staten Island Tech 5-4 Wednesday.

“This was a nice win for us,” said PR coach John Sce. “We’ve been coming up short in a lot of these close games this year. but we’re ceretainly playing better. We got a well-pitched game and made all the plays defensively.”

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Violetta single, two steals, a Chris Osorio walk and John Revilla sacrifice fly. but the Gulls (9-6) scored three in the third and one in the fifth to forge ahead 4-1.

In the home fifth, the Raiders (4-11) climbed to within one as Curry and Osorio delivered two-out RBI singles.

Then in the sixth, Jose Sierra reached on an error, John Reyes was plunked and Jeromy Medina had a bunt single to load the bases with one out. after a Frank DeLeon fly out wasn’t deep enough to score a run, Violetta knocked in two with a single up the middle.

PR closer Curry took the mound for the MSIT seventh and fanned Ryan Mannello but then yieleded a single to Frank Cautela, who stole second. Curry struck out Scott Barnickel for the second out, then Curry issued a free pass to James Sinodinos to put the go-ahead runner on. but Curry got Nick Manisero to ground into a force at second base to end it.

Chris Auletti notched the win in relief of Matt Potestio.

“It was nice to see our guys continue to battle,” Sce said. “We want to be a tough team every time we go out there.”
