The contract of Ty Wigginton is only half paid by the Philadelphia Phillies for 2012. Will Rube Amaro use his remaining funds to bring back Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge? There is a chance both will be resigned after and along with Jimmy Rollins.A conclusion will be needed for this 2-part article and that will be next Monday. It could be delayed by a day or so, if there is an agreement without details of 2012 dollars, because today (Monday) J-Roll’s agent and Rube will meet. If there are unanticipated front-office maneuvers, I have no reason not to add an additional review before the holidays. My reasoning is due in part to four-figure viewings last month, which was unexpectedly strong. I am very appreciative that many of you have decided to return, which is why I’ll continue with the same approach during the new schedule. For newcomers, I am doing a weekly Baseball-Fix Monday that I’ll start on January 9. Also, I’ll publish after every game that is not washed out during the year.My format will remain the same in ‘12 with Nitecap Insight, The Precap and The Apocalyptic Horsemen. The opening will feature certain players plus participants who warrant mention, good and bad, for what they have done in the contest or clubhouse. Penthouse Occupancy will cover all remarkable plays along with solid performances during critical moments by the red pinstripes. The best of those will receive The Crystal Champagne Toast. Cholley’s Doghouse is filled every now and then with a slacking effort. The Outhouse is for something that stinks, like a bad ump call. The Glass House is a stone’s throw away for a man who blows his opportunity to nail a juicier role. The Miniature Mansion is for off-field excellence, like a locker-room influence. However, these houses don’t have visitors after every battle: Some do and others don’t. DECEMBER BASEBALL-FIX MONDAY: The Plan To 25, Part 1: Amaro wants this issue resolved now–and not next February. Rollins’ return is a good fit for both sides. Many deep-pocketed organizations don’t need a shortstop: Boston, Texas, the Yankees, the Halos and Cubs. Milwaukee and St. Louis have first sackers that require determinations before they can sign anybody pricey, like Jimmy. The Giants need to spend money on offense, which means they are more interested in Alex Gonzalez. The Braves and Tigers won’t be out bidding the locals on J-Roll, and Atlanta is in the market for RBI production. The Fish desire Jose Reyes or Albert Pujols for their Hispanic fan-base draw, the Mets want only Reyes, and the Nats are set at short. The wheels in Rube’s head are gyrating and an eyeful is beginning to emerge. When you look at the age, income, pedigree and 2nd-half stats of John Mayberry Jr., you can see the 5-hole hitter behind Ryan Howard. If Big John is the Jayson Werth for 2012 and J-Roll returns, your regular lineup is set plus there is the addition of Wigginton. He will fill in for healing or resting players, be a potent right-handed PH, and he’ll be the RH DH against AL squads. With Jim Thome in the fold, all that remains are bench spots: receiver, infielder and outfielder. Scott Podsednik is the left-swinging stick to backup Mayberry in leftfield, if he cannot handle the every-day job. That leaves Amaro with enough financing to decently improve the favorite part of his roster: pitching. He has $171.5M before he pierces through his ceiling after buyouts and $3M for incentive clauses achieved this summer. The 13 signed members of the club are at $122M: 5 hurlers ($63.5M) and 8 position players ($58.5M). The rest of their returning 9 teammates are at $28.75M: 4 bats ($11.25M) and 5 arms ($17.5M). $150.75M is the tally, leaving $20.75M available for a shortstop and 2 throwers. David Montgomery is willing to pay a Luxury Tax on $5M, which is $875K for needed pieces now and at the trading deadline. The new first time over the payroll limit is now 17.5% under the new CBA. Rollins ($10M), Oswalt ($9M) and Lidge ($1.75M plus incentives) reach the threshold at $20.75M.The sorest offensive spot is the middle of the order, where Chase Utley is more suited for the 2 hole than the 3. After Ryno returns, Hunter Pence will hit third, which leaves the 5 slot open. That said, Mayberry is a strong candidate. He averaged .273 plus 15 bombs last season, but he notched a .301 mark for the final 3 months with 12 homeruns and 37 RBI. That is 24 taters with 74 RBI for both halves of a full 162. However, he only had 163 at-bats for those 16 weeks, which is one third of a year. 111 RBI and 36 blasts are the translation for 489 trips to the plate. The healthy lineup would be SS J-Roll (S), 2B Utley (L), RF Pence (R), 1B Howard (L), LF Mayberry (R), CF Shane Victorino (S), 2B Polly Polanco (R) and C Chooch Ruiz (R). Mayberry has earned a full shot for the only opening and can slug 5th behind Ryno. It also keeps leftfield available for Dom Brown, if things go in a different direction. The bench requirements are a back-up catcher (Brian Schneider), a corner INF-OF right-handed power threat (Wigginton), a left-swinging batter with pop (Thome), an OF (Ben Francisco) and an INF (Wilson Valdez). That leaves only inking J-Roll at $10M, which clears $10.75M for 2 wings. The 10 on the bump are: Doc Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, Vance Worley, Kyle Kendrick, Jon Papelbon, Jose Contreras, Antonio Bastardo and Mike Stutes. One reason to lock-up J-Roll before Christmas with a fair offer is the availability of Oswalt and Lidge. Brian Sanches ($.5M) was added for the mix at the front end of the ’pen, because he brings a veteran presence to a mostly green situation. The last bullpen job ($.5M) also could come from: LHP Raul Valdes, LHP Joe Savery, David Herndon, Justin De Fratus or Michael Schwimer. Rube has a proven track record of acquiring experienced hurlers, but this summer it could be familiar faces, like the Wizard and Lights Out. Update:Laynce Nix is a left-side bat and corner outfielder, who agreed to a 2-year deal–pending a physical–after this article was published. He made $.7M in 2011 and replaces Podsednik on the depth chart. Podsednik becomes minor-league inventory and injury insurance. The Answer, Conclusion is ( Philadelphia Phillies Storyline: What To Expect Next From Amaro, Conclusion ) in my previous publication. This is the 2nd storyline for the 2012 season that can be found in my author archives ( Tal Venada ).The Phillies finished 42 games over .500, which equaled a 2011 of many positives. I have many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially after drubbings and defeats. I alternated the 2011 ERA For The NL East ( Philadelphia Phillies: 2011 ERA For The NL East At Game 162 And Final ) and 2011 ERA For The MLB 5 ( Philadelphia Phillies: Final 2011 ERA For The MLB 5 At Game 162 ) with the last 2 in the links.
