A new off-track betting (OTB) parlor remains on track for Saturday’s opening in Prospect Hts. Doors open tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at Players Pub & Grill, 1250 S. River Rd., with races and wagering starting at 9:30 a.m. The process to bring off-track betting to Prospect Hts. moved swiftly in the last 2-1/2 months. Plans were first presented publicly at the Feb. 27 city council meeting. Zoning board members signed off on the project Mar. 22 and aldermen gave final city approval Apr. 9. The OTB is operated by Hawthorne Race Course, which received Illinois Racing Board approval Apr. 24 to run the parlor. Saturday’s opening event is expected to take place in a tent outside Players Pub. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded to attendees wearing the “best ladies hat.” Highlight of the day will be the running of the Kentucky Derby. Bar owners plan to eventually construct a 2,000 sq. ft. to their building to house the OTB area. Also set for Saturday is the Prospect Hts. Mayor’s Community Breakfast. The breakfast takes place at Crowne Plaza Northbrook, 2875 N. Milwaukee Ave., just south of River Road, from 9 a.m. to noon. At noon, shuttle busses will carry attendees from the hotel to Players Pub to join in the opening of Hawthorne Race Course’s OTB parlor.
