Michigan’s Best Paczki? Celebrate Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras 2012 with prune-filled doughnuts

City of Hamtramck websiteAre you celebrating Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras 2012 with Paczki? I am? UPDATE: Readers respond on Facebook and Hamtramck wins! But Marge’s and Sandy’s in Grand Rapids come close. Other cities nominated. Today is all about Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras 2012 and even prepping ourselves — spiritually — for Ash Wednesday. But in reality — it’s also about Paczki Day. In fact, I woke up this morning to a WZZM-TV reporter in Grand Rapids, who was tasting her first (of many) Paczki. She is originally from Minnesota, and even though she is of Polish decent, had never indulged in a “paczek.” According my friend Bob Schrum on Facebook, he says: “Strictly speaking ‘paczki’ is the plural. The singular is ‘paczek,’ but nobody really wants to eat just one (despite the surrender flag being waved by one’s stomach) Paczki.” So, we are now educated in prune-filled doughnuts. Today’s flavor at Sandy’s in Grand Rapids: Blueberry. Reporter Stacia Kalinoski took a bite, said “Yum.” Then tried to conduct an interview when she took another bite. You have to love our jobs in the media, right? I also ran into my buddy Michelle McKormick, who is now on the WLAV-FM morning show with Tony Gates. Some of you might remember from her radio days at Detroit’s WKRK. She was handing over her credit card to an intern, sending him out on a Paczki run. I don’t know if he ever returned. I traveled through Grand Rapids looking for Paczki, but have yet decided where to make the big purchase. I posted on Facebook: “Help me find Michigan’s Best.” And it seems I have to travel to Hamtramck, so says my old high school football buddy, Chuck Felek, who also responded on Facebook. So, if you’re in the Detroit area, check out this great list put together by’s Ashley Woods, which includes the New Martha Washington Bakery in Hamtramck. Since my new job at is to check out the whole state, I want to hear about other great Paczki locations. Or maybe a good Mardi Gras Party! Who has Michigan’s Best Paczki! Comment below. (And I’m hungry!) Oh, and after all the partying and eating, make sure to make plans for Ash Wednesday. It’s the right thing to do after collecting all those beads and eating a dozen doughnuts.
