At last night’s Golden Globe awards, Madonna unexpectedly picked up the Best Original Song Award, for her track ‘Masterpiece’, which features in the film W.E., which Madonna wrote and directed. However, another contender in the category – Elton John – had earlier on suggested to reporters on the red carpet that Madonna didn’t stand a chance of winning.Arriving at the ceremony, which was hosted by Ricky Gervais, Elton John told reporters that he thought Madonna stood “no f***ing chance” of taking the award home. One of the reporters that he was addressing asked him if they were ‘fighting words’ and his reply was “no, those are accurate words.” When Madonna was informed of his comments later on, on the red carpet, she told them “may the best man win” and made a sly dig at Elton by asking the reporters if he was wearing a dress. Elton’s nominated song ‘Hello Hello’ was co-written by his long-time musical collaborator Bernie Taupin and was featured in the film Gnomeo & Juliet. In her acceptance speech, Madonna admitted being surprised at winning the award and thanked the song’s co-writers Jimmy Harry and Julie Frost, as well as William Orbit, who helped to produce the song. W.E. is a drama focusing on the affair between King Edward VII and the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. It stars Abbie Cornish, JAMES D’ARCY and Andrea Riseborough. In her acceptance speech, Madonna referred to the film’s producer Harvey Weinstein as ‘The Punisher’.
