KTVN Channel 2 – Reno Tahoe News Weather, Video – Ex-students sue LA district over accused teacher

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Parents and 11 former students have filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Unified School District over an elementary school teacher accused of extensive lewd conduct with kids. The suit filed last week in superior court alleges the students at Miramonte Elementary suffered neglect and emotional distress, naming as defendants the superintendent and all seven school board members. Twenty other former students filed a similar suit earlier this month. The teacher, Mark Berndt, is not named in the suit. He is being held on $23 million bail and is next scheduled to appear in court June 14. The district's General Counsel David Holmquist said his office has received the suit and cannot comment on specific allegations, but the district's top priority is providing a safe environment for every student.
