Update: JetBlue pilot Clayton Frederick Osbon, 49, has been charged with interfering with a flight crew. according to federal court documents.Authorities were guarding the JetBlue captain Wednesday as he underwent medical evaluation a day after his erratic behavior forced an emergency landing in Amarillo, the FBI said.JetBlue Airways has suspended Osbon.Osbon was the captain of JetBlue Flight 191, which was diverted to Amarillo on a trip from New York to Las Vegas on Tuesday, when passengers said Osbon left the cockpit, went to a restroom at the back of the plane, then stormed up the aisle shouting about bombs and al-Qaida, among other things, finally being taken down by passengers after pounding on the cockpit door, trying unsuccessfully to gain re-entry.The jetliner carrying 135 passengers and six crew members, including Osbon, landed at 10:11 a.m. Tuesday at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. Many of the passengers aboard the aircraft were traveling to a security convention in Las Vegas.JetBlue officials said they did not know what sparked his erratic behavior.The Federal Aviation Administration requires a pilot to get a medical screening every six months if the pilot is older than 40, according to its website.The FAA includes coronary heart disease, epilepsy, personality disorder severe enough to have repeatedly manifested itself by overt acts, psychosis, substance abuse or dependence and transient loss of control of nervous system function without satisfactory explanation as some conditions that would normally disqualify a pilot, according to its website.“However, in many cases when the condition is adequately controlled, the FAA will issue medical certification contingent on periodic reports,” the website said.The FAA boasts about 5,000 physicians worldwide who are certified to perform the examination, the website said.Administration officials returned neither calls nor e-mails.Osbon, who had a first-class medical certificate, was required to wear corrective lenses, FAA records show. Federal records show his last medical screening took place in December 2011.
