ST MIRREN star Paul McGowan reckons good old-fashioned hard work is the recipe for success for the Buddies this season.Danny Lennon’s men have won plenty of plaudits for playing attractive football this season but McGowan is convinced that the main reason the Paisley team has become a real force in the SPL is the fact they don’t give their opponents a minute’s peace. And the 23-year-old playmaker, who made a permanent move to Saints this summer after being on loan from Celtic last season, has vowed the Buddies won’t take their foot off the gas as they continue their drive up the league table.Next up for McGowan and his team-mates are St Johnstone and he is keen to grab all three points against the Perth team on Saturday to prove that St Mirren Park can become a fortress this season.‘Gowser’ told Express Sports: “We believe that, here in Paisley, we can give anyone a game.“Personally, I loved the way Kilmarnock played last season but they had that work ethic too.“We know we can’t play well in every game and it’s not always going to be pretty but we’ll continue learning and the great thing about us is the fact that we work hard off the ball and don’t give teams a minute’s peace.“If we can keep that up, then it’s only going to be good for us.”McGowan is enjoying a new lease of life at Saints after experiencing a difficult campaign last year as Lennon’s side flirted with relegation. And, with quality players such as Gary Teale, Steven Thompson and Nigel Hasselbaink around him this season, McGowan feels the Buddies are going places. He added: “Fair play to the manager for having the courage to go for it and go out and get players of that calibre.“We now feel we have got the players to go on and enjoy a successful season. It’s what everyone is striving for.”Meanwhile, Lennon insists he is quite prepared to order his players to boot the beautiful game into touch from time to time if the going gets tough in the SPL.The Buddies boss has impressed fans by adopting a passing game but will happily bend his total football philosophy if rival teams come to St Mirren Park and stay in the trenches.Lennon said: “The fans are enjoying our brand of football and quite rightly so but we are not saying that a long ball isn’t a good ball. We are not saying that at all.“It’s just not our way at this minute in time but we’re prepared to make compromises on that.“If we have to do it that way against some teams, then so be it.”
