Hwy. 231 accident causes death » News » St. Clair News Aegis (Pell City, AL)

Pell City — Odenville resident Matthew Moore, 30, died in an automobile collision on Hwy. 231 North on Jan. 1.  The incident is being investigated by the Pell City Police Department. According to a report made by Pell City’s Chief Investigator Joshua Herren, Moore stopped his truck on the shoulder with a foot of the vehicle still in the roadway.  Chris Whitfield, 28, traveling North on 231, was changing his radio.  Both Whitfield and a witness said Whitfield swerved off the road to avoid hitting Moore’s vehicle, but Whitfield struck the driver’s side rear of Moore’s truck with the passenger side front of his vehicle. Whitfield emerged from his vehicle after the accident, running to Moore’s truck to render aid but couldn’t locate Moore.  One witness indicated Moore was under Whitfield’s vehicle, and they unsuccessfully attempted to rescue Moore before emergency personnel arrived at the scene. Evidence discovered by Chief Investigator Herren leads him to believe Moore was outside the vehicle, near the rear of the driver’s side because he was out of gas.  When  his vehicle was struck by Whitfield’s, Moore was found caught in the collision, pinned under the vehicle. Whitfield volunteered to give a blood sample for toxicology, and one was taken by the staff at St. Vincemt’s ER.  The chief investigator will make a determination regarding prosecution in the case, following further discussion with the District Attorney’s office and receiving the results of the toxicology report. Moore was living in Pell City at the Lee Motel with his girlfriend. Whitfield is from the Pell City area.
