Huskies dominate ’Dogs » Sports » The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — A blocked point-after in the first quarter of Edmond North’s football game Friday night proved meaningless to the final outcome, but it sure got head coach Jeremy Dombek off the hook. Without it, he wouldn’t have had anything to preach to his team about. That’s because the Huskies were near-perfect in handing out a 47-0 rout to rival Edmond Memorial at Wantland Stadium. Their defense and special teams dominated enough to keep the game mostly on the Bulldogs’ side of the field, and the North offense helped out by cashing in on five scoring drives in the first half alone. “We felt like we didn’t play well last week, so we challenged them to come out and play with some emotion. And they responded,” said Dombek, whose team improved to 3-0. “It’s a great win. We hadn’t beaten these guys in a long time.” Husky senior quarterback Jesse Matthews was a scoring machine, tossing four touchdown passes and going 6-of-10 for 122 yards. He also legged out 59 yards on the ground. And senior halfback Jarion Tudman did his usual thing, sprinting for 113 yards and a score on only 14 carries. The North defense was suffocating, giving up just 38 yards rushing and 6 yards passing, while forcing four turnovers. In fact, it was that side of the ball which sparked the Huskies early, as they recovered a fumble on Memorial’s 15. Matthews found Troy Davis in the flat for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the next play and, even though the ensuing extra point was blocked, North would lead from there. It took the Huskies only two plays to find paydirt on their next possession, as Matthews found a wide-open Garrett Molinsky down the middle of the field for a 38-yard touchdown strike. That was followed by another touchdown pass — this one from Matthews to Rashad Salaam on the next drive — to make it 20-0 before the first period was finished. Tudman broke free two possessions later and sped down the sideline for a 39-yard touchdown run, before a 43-yard pass to Davis set up a 2-yard touchdown plunge by Jarred Benway that made it 33-0 at the break. North scored on all but three of its first-half possessions, and one of the three that didn’t result in a score still went into the Bulldog red zone. A major part of the Huskies’ success came because of field position. They began all but two first-half possessions inside Memorial territory and their average starting field position was the Bulldog 43. Memorial didn’t have a single first-half drive that reached beyond its own 27 yard line. “That’s a key at any level. People get tired of hearing coaches talk about field position and turnovers, but the reason they talk about it is because it’s so key,” Dombek said. “If you play on the opponent’s side of the field, that helps you in so many ways. It allows you to open things up on offense and be more aggressive on defense.” North’s first possession of the second half resulted in another score, as a 32-yard run by Tudman was the heart of a 71-yard drive that ended in a 16-yard touchdown run by Benway. Matthews wasn’t finished, and tacked on yet another touchdown pass on a 19-yard strike to Jack Courtney with 3:40 to go in the third period that brought about the final tally. The Huskies rushed for an impressive 279 yards in the game, 154 of which came in the second half as Matthews attempted only two passes after intermission. The North win now sets up a battle against Edmond Santa Fe for the city title. The Wolves defeated Memorial, 31-6, the opening week of the season.   Huskies 47, Bulldogs 0 EN    20    13    14    0  – 47 EM    0        0     0     0  – 0 Scoring First period EN – Matthews 15 pass to Davis (kick blocked), 8:41 EN – Matthews 38 pass to Molinsky (Bohnert kick), 5:57 EN – Matthews 7 pass to Salaam (Bohnert kick), 2:58 Second period EN – Tudman 39 run (Bohnert kick), 6:48 EN – Benway 2 run (kick failed), 0:49 Third period EN – Benway 16 run (Bohnert kick), 9:45 EN – Matthews 19 pass to Courtney (Bohnert kick), 3:40
