Houstonians will honor Fla. teen at hoodie-and-headlights protest

Joining others around the country outraged over the shooting death of a black, unarmed Florida teen, activists in Houston are planning a protest calling for justice in the case. The demonstration is asking participants to do two things on Monday: Wear a hoodie and drive during the day with headlights on.“What we’re saying to the world is that a black life is worth something,” Krystal Muhammad, of the New Black Panther Party of Houston, tells KHOU-Channel 11.Trayvon Martin, 17, was wearing a hoodie when he was gunned down by George Zimmerman, a Sanford, Fla., neighborhood-watch captain who told authorities the teen looked suspicious and he shot the boy in self-defense. Martin was unarmed and Zimmerman has not been arrested.Demonstrators around the nation say Martin was a victim of racial profiling.“Just because you see a black man wearing a hoodie does not mean that he’s a bank robber. It does not mean that he’s about to jack someone,” Deric Muhammad told KHOU.According to KTRK-Channel 13, a rally will start at 5 p.m. on Monday at the S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, 3903 Almeda. For the latest in the Trayvon Martin case, click here.
