Suddenly, the college basketball coaching landscape gets on the brink of a major shake-up.
Maryland coach Gary Williams is retiring after 19 seasons, and the hypothesis is already going rearing on who the Terps could tempt for a spot that’s believed among the top 15 in the country.
And many believe Notre Dame’s Mike Brey could be on the brief list.
Brey, who is on his way to the Kentucky Derby, wasn’t immediately available for comment–according to a Notre Dame representative.
Sources tell CBS Sports Network’s Jon Rothstein that Maryland is expected to point Brey since of his deep D.C. area roots.
The Irish head coach has strong affiliations to Maryland. it is following all his home state and where he played his high school basketball at DeMatha. he went to college at nearby George Washington prior to serving as assistant coach back at DeMatha, then at Duke under Coach K.
Brey served as head coach at Delaware before taking over at Notre Dame. The move to South Bend at the time was conceived a surprising one for Brey since he was always reckoned a middle Atlantic guy. now will he return?
Brey resulted Notre Dame to its best regular season in decades this past season, chosen as big East Coach of the Year and Associated Press National Coach of the Year awards.
The Irish lost in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament even so and have achieved the Sweet 16 just once in Brey’s 11 years as head coach. That got in 2003, which is also the last time Maryland made the Sweet 16.
The question is whether Maryland is a major upgrade for Brey? Or with where the Terps and Irish currently stand, is it more of a sidelong move?
You would think when Coach K finally retires from Duke, Brey would be a challenger there. Brey said lately he’s very happy at Notre Dame and is after to be here for a long time to come. maybe there are only a fistful of jobs that could tempt Brey from South Bend at this point. Duke would almost for sure be one, but is Maryland?
An obvious competitor for the Maryland job is VCU coach Shaka Smart, who guided the Richmond based Rams to the Final Four in a shocking run that set out in a First Four game.
Or could Maryland be a job that finally lures Butler Coach Brad Stevens from Indianapolis? Stevens has guided the Bulldogs to the national championship game each of the last two seasons.
