Wellington Police and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway authorities are investigating the death of an elderly woman after she is hit by a train.

The woman was killed just before 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Two trains were crossing at the 600 block of South Washington.

“The pedestrian waited for the first train. Her view possibly could have been obstructed by the first train, so she may not have seen the second one, unfortunately, until it was too late,” said Sgt. John Defore, Wellington Police.

Train crews with BNSF told police they were headed east on the tracks, entering Wellington, at a slow rate of speed when the train struck the woman.

Authorities are still investigating the accident.
