Written by Liz Skalka Monday, 29 August 2011 11:44 WEDNESDAY, 11 AM — Easton police are getting the word out to residents that drinking water and packaged meals are being provided at the police department by emergency management officials. Sometime today, 24 cases of water and 48 cases of MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat) will arrive at the department. If residents wish to pick up water or food, call the police department at 203-268-4111 to be sure they have arrived. The town also has non-potable water available at the police department, the senior center and Helen Keller Middle School. Bring your own containers. Residents may also charge their cell phones at the senior center. Showers will be availabe at Helen Keller Middle School from 3 to 7 until power is restored. Bring your own towels and toiletries. As of 9 a.m. this morning, 63% of United Illuminating Co. customers in Easton were still without power. TUESDAY, 10:45 AM — According to the United Illuminating Co., 72% of Easton is still without power as of this morning. Easton police also said that 14 roads throughout town are still closed, as UI and the town highway department work to clear trees and repair power lines. Helen Keller Middle School will be open from 3 to 7 today for residents who wish to take showers. Residents must bring their own towels and toiletries. The school will be open daily for showers until power is restored. Town Hall and the Easton Public Library are without power and closed. Those who need assistance from the Easton Senior Center may call Director Val Buckley at 203-993-5143. The barbecue scheduled for this afternoon at the senior center has been canceled. Water for residents is available at the senior center and police department. Bring your own containers. MONDAY, NOON — As of Monday afternoon, much of the town is still without power and several roads are blocked due to downed wires and trees, said Easton Police Capt. James Candee. Parts of Routes 138 and 58 and Adams Road are closed, as well as other roads in town, Capt. Candee said. Extra police officers will continue on duty until the aftermath of the storm is resolved. Capt. Candee said since the storm, the department has received 42 reports of trees resting on wires, 31 reports of downed wires, and has closed 18 roads. A liaison from the United Illuminating Co. is in town and is working with the highway department in identifying downed power lines and clearing trees. Capt. Candee said the department did not receive any emergency calls during the height of the storm. Much of the damage from the storm was wind-related and the town received little flooding, he said. Right now, town hall is running on generator power and town hall’s main phone line is not in service. The Easton Public Library is closed because it does not have a generator but the Easton Senior Center is open, and was even open during the storm. Capt. Candee advised residents to stay home if they can so crews can continue to clear roads. Also, if possible, check on your neighbors to make sure they are safe, he said. “Just say hi and make sure everyone’s all right,” he said. As for power restoration: “Be patient. We’re working,” he said. Police have received several calls asking about a shelter and will decide later whether they plan to open one at Helen Keller Middle School. < Prev Next >
