Beginning next week political cartoon Doonesbury, which is never shy about taking on controversial issues, will tackle the national debate surrounding abortion. In particular, it will lampoon the the proposed laws that would require women to have an ultrasound before an abortion. One of those measures is currently making its way through the Idaho Legislature. The Doonesbury series is expected to feature a woman who goes to an abortion clinic and is confronted by several people who suggest she should be ashamed. The woman is even called “a slut,” referring to Rush Limbaugh’s controversial comments last week. One of the panels in the Doonesbury comic strip is also expected to equate the controversial “transvaginal exam” to rape.Already one national newspaper syndicate, Universal UClick, is offering its newspapers a replacement strip in case they refuse to publish the scheduled series.
