Steve Mitchell/US PresswireFormer Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen makes a save for the Panthers in Saturday night’s win over Carolina. The Devils can thank their former backup goalie, Scott Clemmensen, for setting up a first-round playoff matchup with the Florida Panthers. Clemmensen was in goal Saturday night as the Panthers won the Southeast Division title by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-1. That gave the Panthers the third seed in the Eastern Conference. They will face the sixth-seeded Devils. The series will open in Florida, with the league announcing the schedule Sunday afternoon. Three things you need to know about the Panthers: 1. There is a strong Devils connection. Pete DeBoer coached the Panthers his first three seasons in the NHL, failing to reach the postseason. John Madden, signed mid-season by Florida, won two Cups in his 10 seasons with the Devils. Backup goalie Scott Clemmensen spent five seasons as Martin Brodeur’s backup. 2. Coach Kevin Dineen broke up the Tomas Fleischmann-Stephen Weiss-Kris Versteeg line, but they dominated the Devils this season. Versteeg had five goals and one assist in four games, Weiss a goal and four assists. 3. Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell is a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate.
