DE Kyle Vanden Bosch sat out practice Wednesday, but still appears on track to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Buccaneers. Vanden Bosch’s absence was “not injury related” according to the Lions’ injury report. Coach Jim Schwartz has been careful with the 32-year-old since he suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 of the preseason. Vanden Bosch underwent neck surgery last December and finished the season on injured reserve, and while he insists the injuries are not related, the Lions have the luxury of limiting his snaps in practice and on game days thanks to Lawrence Jackson. A first-round pick by the Seahawks in 2008, Jackson had a career-high six sacks last year – five in the final eight games – and can play either defensive end position. He said it took him the first few months of the season to get used to playing a wide nine technique in the Lions defense after playing head-up on the tight end throughout college and for much of his time in Seattle. Jackson was traded to the Lions last August for a sixth-round pick. Notes: The Lions revamped their linebacking corps in free agency, signing Stephen Tulloch and Justin Durant and moving DeAndre Levy outside, with games like Sunday’s in mind. RB LeGarrette Blount is the type of pounder the Lions struggled to tackle last year, and tight ends like Kellen Winslow gave the team fits, too. The Tulloch-Durant-Levy combination isn’t the best in the league, but it’s a far cry from what the Lions trotted out for their opener last year, when Levy was hurt and Zack Follett, Julian Peterson and Landon Johnson were first in the rotation. All three of those linebackers are currently out of the league. More: Check out reports from 32 teams
