Carroll: Sidney Rice placed on IR

The news delivered by Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll after this afternoon’s practice was a bit surprising, but understandable. The Seahawks will place receiver Sidney Rice on season-ending, injured reserve for the remainder of the season after back-to-back concussions in two of the past three games.Carroll said linebacker Michael Morgan will be elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, and receiver Deon Butler likely will be active for the first time this season since being added to the active roster from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.“We have to give him time,” Carroll said. “So he’s going to have to sit for a number of weeks before he’d be able to play anyway. And so we just want to make sure that we take care of him, and don’t bring him back too soon, and get him right.“He’s been banged up all season, and this is just kind of one more situation we have to deal with. And obviously the concussion is the issue though.”Rice has dealt with injuries all season. He missed the first two games of the year with a labrum tear in his shoulder, and also has been on the injury report in following weeks with knee and foot issues.Carroll said he does not expect Rice to have to have surgery to repair his shoulder before next season. Injuries were a concern when Seattle inked Rice to a five-year, $41 million deal, $18.5 of which is guaranteed. Rice, 25, missed 10 games in 2010 because of microfracture hip surgery, and has only played a full, 16-game season once in four years. The year he played a full season in 2009 also was his best as a pro, finishing with 83 catches for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns, and making his first and only Pro Bowl. “Here’s what we know – he’s a great player,” Carroll said. “We see the stuff we can do and the impact he can have. And just unfortunately we never got the continuity of getting all of the benefits of his play. And it will happen.” Currently, Rice is second on the team in receptions with 32 catches for 484 yards and two touchdowns.“It’s something I didn’t want to have to come up this way for a guy to get hurt,” Butler said. “But I think everyone’s is like, ‘Okay, well it’s another opportunity to just show the other skill guys that we have on this team. There’s a lot of talent on this team, and obviously we’re going to miss Sidney, but there’s definitely a lot of other guys that can step up.” We haven’t got an official injury report yet, but Carroll did say that David Hawthorne (knee) and Richard Sherman (calf) will have to work out before the game with trainers to make sure they are ready to go.But Carroll expects both of those guys to play and contribute. INJURY UPDATE: Byron Maxwell (illness) has been ruled out for Seattle.Linebacker David Hawthorne (knee) and cornerback Richard Sherman (calf) are questionable. Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (pectoral) and defensive tackle Alan Branch (ankle) are probable. For Philadelphia, offensive tackle King Dunlap (concussion), linebacker Mosie Fokou (ankle), receiver Jeremy Maclin (hamstring/shoulder), quarterback Mike Vick (ribs) and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle) have been ruled out.Running back LeSean McCoy (toe) and cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) are questionable.Defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins (thumb).
