Businesses Prepared for Last-Minute Tax Filers

By Lauren MicklerEUGENE, Ore. — It’s crunch time. Even with two extra days to file, people are scrambling to finish their taxes just 24 hours before the deadline.Places like Liberty Tax Service on Coburg and H&R Block are ready to stay open late as this year’s tax deadline approaches and some customers are still just beginning the filing process.”All projections say that this will probably be one of the busiest seasons in years,” said H&R Block district manager Gary Nielsen.”These last few days, it’s just kind of crazy the amount of tax returns that are done, and of course it’s compounded by people who come in and even begin these last few days,” said Liberty Tax Service owner Tim Sensabaugh.Kelsey Aronstein said she wasn’t planning on waiting this long, but filling out all the paperwork on her own ended up being too much to handle.”I freaked out because I’m kind of self-employed, and so there’s a lot of kind of complicated tax stuff and I stuck my head in the sand because it was scary,” Aronstein said.People have all types of reasons for waiting until the last minute:Some are waiting on paperwork and tying up loose ends, and some just run out of time. But the good news is these offices have flexible schedules when it comes to this time of year.”I can be open till midnight if I need to (laughs),” Nielsen said.”We’ll be open tonight until the last person leaves, which I’m sure will be 11 o’clock or later, and we’ll be open till midnight, which of course is the electronic filing deadline,” Sensabaugh said.Yes, Sensabaugh says people do wait that long.”Every year my last transmission of a tax return has been after 11:45 p.m., so do I expect it? I wish it weren’t the case, but I’m just going to be prepared for it and not be surprised,” Sensabaugh said.
