MYFOXNY.COM – “Angels got me to her,” said Newark Mayor Cory Booker during Good Day NY on Friday referring to his heroic efforts in saving his neighbor from her burning home late Thursday. Booker was treated and released from the hospital after suffering second-degree burns and smoke inhalation. His security detail assisted in the rescue. The fire broke out at a two-story building on the Upper Clinton Hill section of the city. “Something exploded just as we walked to the top of the stairs. I had a little bit of a scuffle with my detail… I convinced them to let me up… Once I got past the burning kitchen I had my most profound come Jesus moment…Once I got in there, I couldn’t find her, but I think angels got me to her,” said Booker. The woman sufferd burns to her back. Booker said he has blisters on his hand. “I’m thankful to be here. I’m just grateful everyone is OK.” Booker, an avid Twitter user, used the social media site to update his followers. “Thanks everyone, my injuries were relatively minor. Thanks to Det. Alex Rodriguez who helped get all of the people out of the house,” tweeted Booker early Friday morning. “Thanks 2 all who are concerned. Just suffering smoke inhalation. We got the woman out of the house. We are both off to hospital. I will b ok,” he tweeted at 10:15 p.m. The cause of the fire is unclear. He is expected to address the media about the rescue Friday morning.
