Apparent suicide at Occupy protest in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. • A military veteran apparently shot himselfThursday at an Occupy Wall Street encampment in Vermont’s largestcity, fellow protesters said. A hospital spokesman said later thatthe man, 35, had died. Deputy Chief Andi Higbee said the public was not believed to beat risk after the 2 p.m. shooting at City Hall Park inBurlington. People who knew the victim in the encampment said they were surethe man, who said he was a veteran, had shot himself. Higbee said police were trying to notify the man’s family; hisname was not released. He is believed to be from the Burlingtonarea. Here are some other developments in the Occupy protests: CALIFORNIA Dozens of people were arrested during Occupy demonstrations atthe University of California-Berkeley, as authorities twice clashedwith protesters trying to set up encampments. The bulk of thearrests came Wednesday night, as authorities in riot gearconfronted demonstrators. DELAWARE A judge ruled that Occupy Delaware protesters can use a downtownplaza in Wilmington as they see fit pending a hearing today in alawsuit claiming that the city is violating their rights ofassembly and free speech. Assistant City Solicitor Rosamaria Tassone-Dinardo says theprotesters can enter the plaza and sit on benches day or night, butthey cannot establish an “encampment” without a permit. MASSACHUSETTS Dozens of Harvard University students have set up tents inHarvard Yard in the shadow of the Ivy League school’s founder toprotest what they say is a growing wealth gap in the country andthe university’s perceived role in creating that inequality. OREGON Portland’s mayor ordered Occupy Portland on Thursday to takedown its tent city on two adjacent downtown parks by midnightSaturday, saying conditions at the camp had become dangerous,unhealthy and a refuge for criminals. A 29-year-old man at the Occupy Portland encampment was arrestedWednesday on suspicion of throwing an improvised incendiary deviceat a downtown office building, the latest in a series of incidentsthat has shaken the confidence of many of the movement’s supportersin city government. SOUTH CAROLINA Occupy Wall Street protesters interrupted a foreign policyspeech by Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann,saying she was more concerned with dividing Americans than helpingthem. Bachmann was delivering the speech Thursday on the deck of themothballed aircraft carrier Yorktown near Charleston when theprotesters stood up and began shouting, “Mike check!”
