2011 Preakness Odds see Plenty of Long Shots, But who Is most Likely to Steal an Upset Win?
The 2011 Preakness odds have been released, and it should come as little surprise that Kentucky Derby champion Animal Kingdom is the odds-on favorite heading into Saturday’s race.
Animal Kingdom surprised everyone with a win in the Derby, going off as a 20-1 underdog on the day of the race, but enters Pimlico’s big race as a 4-1 favorite.
But, this field remains as wide open as the Derby was, with a dearth of truly dominant horses, and plenty of middle-of-the-road long shots capable of stealing a win. But, who among the longer shots has the best chance at winning this race?

There are some definite high-value, long-odds picks in the field, and the list begins with 15-1 underdog Shackleford. the Derby’s fourth-place finisher, Shackleford was the pace-setter for much of the early portion of the Kentucky Derby, and was beaten only by a late charge from behind him. He’s got the speed to take a win at Pimlico, and the endurance to finish solidly, even if he’s not going to dominate down the stretch.
Midnight Interlude delivered a lackluster showing at Churchill, getting stuck in the midst of the pack and finishing 16th, but at 15-1 in this one, he has the skills to score an upset. Sway away could be a good value pick, but despite 15-1 odds, most don’t see him having much of a chance here.
In the end, Shackleford looks like the best long shot contender in this race. he ran exceptionally well at Churchill Downs, and a track in better condition at Pimlico could well be what he needs to ensure a strong finish down the stretch. I’m fairly surprised his odds are this long coming in, and with a field full of uninspiring horses, look for him to contend once again here.
